Ways to say
'I Love You!' |
|
During this month dedicated to Love, let's not forget our children! What a great time to remember to say 'I Love You!'
Here are some fun and easy ways to make this Valentine's Month special!
1. Books are a great way to let your child know how much you love them. I recommend 'Mama do you Love Me?' - Barbara M. Joosse or 'Guess How Much I Love You' - Sam Mc Bratney
Even my 13 yr. old still remembers and quotes these books!
2. Use a Dry Erase marker to write a special message on their bathroom mirror.
What a great way to start their day!
Even if your child isn't old enough to read, a heart is understood by even the very young.
3. Pack a couple of Hershey's Kisses in their lunchbox with a special 'I Love You! Have a Great Day!' message on their napkin. This may be the pick-me-up they need after a Math test!
4. A heart-shaped after school snack is perfect! Use a cookie-cutter to make cookies or sandwiches!
5. Text, Facebook or Email your older child a special 'I love you and am so proud of you' message.
Even when they act too old.. they always like to hear how much they are loved.
6. Confetti can be a fun surprise in a homework folder, dance bag or book their reading. Your younger ones might enjoy finding stickers!
7. The gift of time is a great way to say I Love You! Take some time with just you and one child. One on one attention not typically given to a child in a family of 6 might be the best gift of all.
Use your imagination to come up with some ideas of your own! Remember that 'I Love You' is NEVER heard too much and will make your child a more loving adult!

Let's Rodeo
San Antonio!
Some Rodeo History...
"A volunteer organization that emphasizes agriculture and education to develop the youth of Texas."
In 1854, in an emerging Texas cattle town, history was made when one of the first ever Texas Agricultural Fairs was held in San Antonio. In the following years, many other fairs and expositions came to San Antonio and all encountered the same problem, inadequate facilities to accommodate their needs. It was evident South Texas was in dire need of facilities to serve as a showplace for a livestock exposition.
Since SALE's inception in 1950, the Stock Show & Rodeo has grown to be one of the largest and most prestigious, single events in San Antonio with over one million visitors entering the grounds each year.
To date, the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo educational commitment exceeds over $96 million with a record $8.1 million committed in 2009 in the form of scholarships, grants, endowments, auction, calf scramble program and show premiums paid to youth.
The success of the event, positive impact on the community, world class rodeo action and entertainment and ability to provide financial support to Texas youth is the result of many hours of hard work by committed SALE volunteers.
SALE has a rich tradition and history of stewardship to the community, agriculture industry and youth of Texas. With a clear vision of the future, a successful past and continual dedication from over 4,000 volunteers, SALE will continue to provide wholesome family entertainment and be a pillar of strength and support to the youth of Texas. |

TRUE STORY OF THE THREE LITTLE PIGS
January 8 - February 6, 2009
Tuesday – Friday 9:45 am & 11:30 am
Friday at 7 pm & Saturdays at 2 pm
Based on a book by Jon Scieszka, Adapted for the stage by Alyn Carderelli
There are always two sides to a story, and though all of us think that we know the story of the three little pigs, think again! In this stage adaptation of the popular book, a local news reporter is on the hunt for the real scoop about the "big bad wolf" and his supposed nemeses, the three little pigs. The reporter is determined to set the record straight about why the wolf visited the three little pigs in the first place - to borrow a cup of sugar to make a cake for his grandmother's birthday, of course! While we may believe that the wolf huffed and puffed to blow the pigs' houses down, the reporter uncovers that he simply had a bad cold and a powerful sneeze! Audience members will be called upon to act as the story's detectives, and will even help choose the story's ending. Children and adults will enjoy this fairy tale with a twist, and will learn a valuable lesson about learning both sides to a story.

Safety First When Exercising With Your Little One
by Karen Schroeder Kassel, MS, RD, MEd
|
A great way to expose children to exercise is to take them along when you run, walk, bike, or hike. Kids will enjoy the fresh air and learn from early on that exercise is fun and an essential part of a healthful lifestyle. But, there are a few extra things to consider when bringing the little one along for a ride.
The Basics
The main types of child carriers used in exercise are: running strollers, bike seats or trailers, and backpacks. Regardless of the type of carrier used, there are several factors to consider to ensure a fun outing for both you and your child:
- Keep a moderate pace.
- Be especially aware of your surroundings.
- Watch out for dangerous terrain.
- Dress your child for the elements.
- Never leave your child unattended.
- Use safety harnesses.
- Don’t exceed the weight limit of your carrier.
Running Strollers
Expect to pay at least $200 to get a safe running stroller. Look for a sturdy and stable stroller that will not tip on turns. It should also have:
- A locking brake
- A secure handle that will not become slippery from sweat
- A safety wrist strap, which will prevent the stroller from getting away from you
Bring your baby with you to try the stroller out for size. It should have a deep seat and a secure seat belt. Wait until an infant is at least 6 months of age before placing them in a running stroller. Some manufacturers recommend waiting until the baby is 12 months so that a bicycle helmet may be used to offer extra protection. Other ways to prevent excess jostling of your baby's head are to run on a smooth surface, and use large, slightly deflated tires.
On your run
Remember that the stroller is wider than you. Allow more room between yourself and traffic, and be on the lookout for hazards such as open car doors. And never, never let go of the stroller or safety wrist strap, it can easily get away from you.
